Tatsuya Akita
Tatsuya Akita was born in Osaka, Japan in 1987 and graduated in Three Dimensional Design at Northumbria University in 2011. He designs products which are honest in terms of the materials and processes employed. He loves to investigate various scales of manufacture with a view to learning their limitations whilst exploiting them constructively. Material selection also plays a major role and each project brings with it new things to explore and research.

Ellen is a British freelance furniture, product and interior accessories designer based in Newcastle producing designs for manufacture, licence and commissions.

She is concerned that attitudes towards products and furniture today are too disposable. Her focus is to create beautiful contemporary designs with added value encouraging the user to form an attachment with her work.

She makes and designs lots of things and is not defined by one process material or craft. Her work brings a contemporary twist to iconic products and furniture.

“I make things that want to be loved be used and to have a life of their own like the objects that inspire them”.

About the Scheme

The Designers in Residence scheme is a post-graduate initiative designed to support Northumbria alumnae wishing to develop their own professional design practice. It is run within Northumbria University’s faculty of Arts, Design and Social Sciences for BA (Hons) Three Dimensional Design graduates with its professional practice centered around the activities of furniture and product design. The signature of the scheme is its particular engagement with the design of products that both celebrate the value of traditional craft manufacturing and are contemporary, rich in narrative and market ready. In short we want are our graduates to be able to make and sell great ‘British’ ideas.

The DIR scheme in its current form was formally established in 2000 and since 2003 has worked closely with Enterprise Campus to develop the provision of resources for its activities, particularly to support residents to show their work at national and international trade fairs. Residents are given enterprise start-up support to encourage them to view their practice not simply as a creative activity but also as a commercial enterprise capable of generating income and employment for themselves and others.

British design education is often bemoaned by the creative industries for failing to properly equip graduates for the ins and outs of the business of design; whilst at the same time it has become a truism of British industry that it innovates but does not make and sell. Northumbria University’s Designer in Residence scheme was developed with a view to addressing both of these issues.

About Design at Northumbria

		<description>discussions from the dungeon...

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

As part of the British European Design Group (BEDG) trade mission to China in November a written piece about the 'Tools for Everyday Life' project appeared in a publication that set up a series of "creative design forums/debates/seminars". The "forums" that took place in both Qingdao and Beijing looked at issues of sustainability. The piece was put together following some discussion about the issues in the room that acts as a moodily lit home to the Designers in Residence.

Here it is:

“Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.”
 From Hopes and Fears for Art

The design profession was borne of an industrialised world where the ideas and plans for a product were separated from the modes of its manufacture. Indeed, ‘Design’ as enthusiastic young servant to and a stoker of insatiable demand for goods and services produced on an almost unimaginable scale is partly to blame for the environmental problems the world faces today and the predicted catastrophes in the future.
In the face of global warming and a harmful loss of biodiversity from what are now clearly unsustainable methods of manufacture and consumption, logic demands that ‘Design’ grows up and moves from pleasing the status quo with ever more products and services to taking the lead in integrating technological advances with an awareness of ecology. However, on a planet with many conflicting interests and massive disparities in standards of living, the biggest challenge is creating a political and social will for real change across the globe. A daunting task
Against this backdrop, defining let alone measuring meaningful environmentally sustainable design practice is complex if at all possible. Both purely techno centric and eco centric approaches to working out how best to meet the wants and needs of the world whilst not doing irreparable damage have their limits. The former tends to ignore the complexity of the interrelated nature of the world we inhabit while the latter disregards the potential of manmade solutions. Whilst there is a clear need for practical and economically viable solutions/alternatives to be employed on an epic scale to deal with issues related to fossil fuel use, realistically there needs also to be a change in patterns of consumption and attitudes amongst affluent nations to the props/products and patterns of daily life.
The ‘Tools for Everyday Life’ project at Northumbria University is an investigation of the interactions between product concept, manufacture and end user. Whilst the project doesn’t directly set out to tackle issues of sustainable design and in some ways aims to transcend the temporary feel good factor offered by supposedly ‘green’/’eco’/’environmentally friendly’ products, the intention is to look at the connections with the ‘stuff ‘ that surrounds us. By creating functional objects that are cherished rather than seasonally replaced, the human relationship with the material world is explored. The products in the ‘Tools for Everyday Life’ collection exist as a celebration of a designer’s appreciation of the things people do everyday and the meaningful value of the thoughtful craft of manufacture. In many ways William Morris has been here before:

{The points of view of Neil Conley and Trevor Duncan expressed when giving background to their contributions to the "Tools for Everyday Life" project in many ways illustrate how attitudes to the creation and consumption of 'things' are important to the many complex debates and 'blame games' that surround issues of 'the environment'}

Fossil Light (Neil Conley)

&#60;img src="http://payload56.cargocollective.com/1/6/219834/3424742/Neil Conley - Fossil BEDG.jpg" width="591" height="874" width_o="591" height_o="874" src_o="http://payload56.cargocollective.com/1/6/219834/3424742/Neil Conley - Fossil BEDG_o.jpg" data-mid="24506639"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

“Manufactured from amberised borosilicate glass, The Fossil contains an Edison filament with a touch sensitive dimmer switch that ‘breathes with you’ whilst you grasp it.

Intended as living museum piece, the lamp is a preservation of Thomas Edison’s first truly reliable filament bulb, invented circa 1880. Resembling a fossil preserved in amber, the lamp demonstrates the transition of the filament from an object of fundamental functionality, to its place today as an icon of design heritage. A representation of the beauty of innovation, the bulb is now retired to a life behind glass, as a true industrial fossil.

Blown using laboratory glass production methods, with an amber finish ordinarily used to prevent the contents of chemical vases and drug vessels from deteriorating, the capsule form is a reference to the material’s scientific heritage - Whilst the finish itself enhances the notion of preservation.

The pulsing dimmer switch enables the user to ‘breathe life’ back into the filaments, establishing the warmth and magnetism that sets traditional bulbs apart from many contemporary lighting solutions.”

CC41 Jugs 1&#38;2  (Trevor Duncan)

&#60;img src="http://payload56.cargocollective.com/1/6/219834/3424742/Jug 5x7.jpg" width="590" height="826" width_o="590" height_o="826" src_o="http://payload56.cargocollective.com/1/6/219834/3424742/Jug 5x7_o.jpg" data-mid="24506780"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

“Although silversmiths were perhaps the original industrial designers, producing highly functional useful objects in beautiful materials, the industry has now mostly become confined to and concerned with the production of decorative or ceremonial objects. Inspired by a strongly held belief in the value of utility as the foundation for good design this project strives to bring back together the application of functional design with the industrial craft practice of the silversmith.
Design of the CC41 JUGS 1&#38;2 draws heavily on early C20 oil cans found in industrial workshops that had very little to do with anything other than function – a fixed volume of 1 quart, a balanced handle and a spout. Whilst these objects had little or no real intrinsic value their functional excellence now gives them a status and integrity that transcends being simply tools fit for purpose and makes them beautiful objects. To amplify the functional value of the design each jug is produced from 30oz of Britannia silver (purer and whiter than Stirling silver) and employs traditional manufacturing processes including hand forming, spinning, polishing and plating resulting in objects without obsolescence.”

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

The Pre and Post Sketch
&#60;img src="http://payload56.cargocollective.com/1/6/219834/3424742/ellen drawing.jpg" width="600" height="615" width_o="600" height_o="615" src_o="http://payload56.cargocollective.com/1/6/219834/3424742/ellen drawing_o.jpg" data-mid="17744576"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
During the development of the products for the ‘A tool for Everyday Life’ project there have been discussions amongst the designers about all manner of design issues, ranging from frustration with the brief through to skills, processes, timescales, costs, the point of any of it. In short, the usual discourse that surrounds the design and production of made things. The vehicle for this exchange is often a drawing.

Once a designer gets past the self consciousness of showing a rough idea quickly drawn or even physically drawing in front of others he/she often finds it can be the only way of expediently resolving, confirming or raising an important issue.

One thing that was talked about a lot by the designers of the Tools for Everyday Life was the idea of the genuine pre-sketch (‘pre’ in the sense it was done before it’s content was resolved) versus the post-sketch done after the object has been designed but passed off as a preliminary musing. Monographs, blogs and promotional websites often include a designer’s drawings to help illustrate the background and inspiration to a project. Many of these are ‘post-sketches’. The content of such ‘after the fact material’ is useful as a process summary and may well impress a client paying for the privilege of the designer’s time but also helps aid the myths that surround the creative process. The myth of a lone genius being struck by a moment of inspiration, jotting down an idea almost fully formed is ably reinforced with a nice annotated post sketch. The ‘post-sketch’ edits out the angst of hours spent mulling over what might be discarded. And to be honest the true design process illustrated in quickly drawn ‘roughs’ never intended to be shown anywhere might not be that attractive.

The randomness of a pre sketch, with no audience for it imagined, can often contain a shopping list, profanity or unrelated musing whereas the self conscious post sketch is a bit of communication looking to either tell a palatable story of design development or in some cases add value to something where the designer worries there is none.

		<description>This is an ongoing project from the community of practice that surrounds the DiR Scheme (work from past and present residents and Northumbria staff)

Recognising an increasing desire for us to reconnect with the physical world and the objects within in it, this project explores both the design language of utilitarian products and the value of making skills.
The premise here is that knowing how to make something leads to a clearer understanding of an object’s logic, beauty and meaning. Craft revivals sparked by austerity measures, nostalgia and/or stylistic concerns may come and go and new technologies might democratize production but the makers knowledge of materials and processes bound up in useful products reminds us there is nothing wrong with liking ‘stuff’.

The ‘Tools for Everyday Life’ project aims to reinstate a balance of artistry, both manual and machined - championing not solely products, but also the things that are used to create them.

Trade mission to Qingdao and Beijing, China.
Following successful UKTI (UK Trade and Investment) supported BEDG (British European Design Group) participation at Events in the USA, the Designers in Residence were invited to take part in a trade mission to China this month. Following visits to manufacturers and ‘creativity parks’ in Qingdao, seasoned campaigner/ senior lecturer Colin Wilson and designer in residence Danny Duquemin-Sheil presented the Tools for Everyday Life project during China Creative design week at the Design Nova exhibition and Fair in Beijing.
A massive thanks is due to Karin Beate Philips and her team at the BEDG for their efforts in organizing the trade mission. We look forward to working with new friends and partners in China.

The Submariner by Neil Conley
The Submariner is a dimmable backlit table lamp that debuted at Design Junction as part of the Tools for Everyday Life collection of products/

"Two pieces of bead-rolled steel form the lamp's shell; held in place by two worm-driven clamps.

The process of bead rolling introduces rigidity to the lightweight sheet structure; providing a return to house the diffusers whilst creating exterior channels for the clamps.

The diffusers are available in a selection of heavy tints, allowing the bulb to be at maximum luminosity without creating glare, with light escaping through the aperture at the rear. The body is available in a combination of three finishes; galvanised, enamel gloss, or textured matte.

The form and construction of the lamp is a reference to the materials and techniques seen in traditional marine exploration; port holes, diving helmets, periscopes…"

NEIL CONLEY DESIGNS THE 2012 NEW DESIGNERS AWARDS
"Commissioned exclusively for this year’s event, the New Designers 2012 awards package is a balance of two underlying themes; the notion of consistency and quality of message, and the celebration of design during London’s Olympic year.

Throughout the decades, Olympic design has often been a measure of the successes and universal pertinence of contemporary design. From Munich to Vancouver, a resolute stance on execution and clarity has set the precedent for considered, consistent, and beautiful design responses.

Designed as an alternative resolution to the London 2012 design concept, the New Designers Awards hopes to reinstate these themes during one of the world’s premier graduate design events: A culmination of the best amateur talent across multiple disciplines, contributing to an event of great quality."

BEERMATS
Designers in Residence beermats are back. A popular give away at our recent show at the ICFF they have a specially created illustration by current resident Neil Conley for the ongoing Tools for Everyday Life project. We have all but run out but more are on the way! Again they are a fine example of the standard 94mm square format (corner radius 6.35mm) so loved by tegestologists.

THE NORTHERN TOOL HITS THE STANDS
The Designers in Residence showcase at the Dock (The Tom Dixon hosted part of the London Design Festival) saw the distribution of the Northern Tool: A newspaper to report/ explain the activities of the community of practice that surrounds the scheme at Northumbria University. Download the more thoroughly proof read PDF here.

Those lucky enough to have grabbed a printed copy can while away some time spotting several typos and alignment issues as well as enjoy the tool related word search on Page 16.

The newspaper profiles the ongoing ‘Tools for Daily Life' project and the work of Designers in Residence past and present. There are currently no plans for another edition.

Here are some images from the exhibition that runs until Sunday 25th September. Exhibition design was of a minimalist nature so as to make the most of both the grandeur of the white building gallery and beautifully detailed products on display.

NEW DESIGNERS AWARD FOR NEIL CONLEY
New Designers continues to be the premier showcase for new design talent and an invaluable springboard for all who exhibit. The One Year On feature at the event is a selected exhibition of work from designers one year into business. Neil fought off competition from 50 other selected designers to scoop the One Year On Award for 2011! View the judges’ comments and an interview with Neil here.

Here is one of those interesting photographs that normally grace the pages of celebrity magazines and blogs. The image that captures the mix of the slightly awkward fixed ‘wedding’ grin, genuine excitement and a look that shouts “show me the cocktails” was taken as Neil received his award.

Fresh for the ICFF
New products from Designers in Residence Neil Conley and David Irwin were given their first public airing at the ICFF in New York.

The Side Cross Chair launched by David Irwin has an elegant construction consisting of 2 interlocking profiles that support a fully upholstered seat. The frame is made from solid walnut and the seat covered in 100% wool fabric from British manufacurer Camira.

Neil Conley’s “OIL” vases are “fundamentally an expression of consumption. The collection of oil drum vases, are produced using laboratory glass production methods. Each vase represents a nation, with a volume directly relative to its oil consumption. A series of 5 vases were produced entitled; USA, CHINA, UK, IRAQ, and the DRoC [Democratic Republic of Congo], each directly relative to the others”.
Neil also debuted “SNOWGLOBAL“ a series of snow globes created in response to the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, 2010. You can read a review of Neil's products on Core77

Designers in Residence in NYC
We have a booth (stand #2310) at this year’s International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) in New York City from May the 14th until the 17th.

Continuing the retrospective element of our shows this year, we are displaying a history of the 10 years of the scheme. We are also exhibiting brand new work from first year residents Neil Conley and Ellen Thomas as well as unveiling ‘fresh’ furniture from past residents David Irwin and James UK. Also presented at the fair at the Jacob K Javits Center on 655 West 34th Street will be the results of a brief to design a ‘Tool for Daily Life’ set for the community of practice that surrounds the Designers in Residence scheme.

Promotional Beer Mats launched
Admittedly not a massive news story, but noteworthy nonetheless. The fact you are reading this suggests either the Beer Mats, that point to our own little place on the World Wide Web, work as advertising or are maybe completely unnecessary. Still they are a fine example of the standard 94mm square format (corner radius 6.35mm) so loved by tegestologists.

Photographs of these mats in unusual/exotic/far-flung settings are gladly received

Ten Years of the Residency
The Residency in its current form started in 2000. To mark 10 years of the scheme, we are putting together a number of events during 2010/11 that whilst continuing to promote new work will cast a retrospective glance over what the scheme has helped to achieve. Watch this space for details.

The Designers in Residence stand at 100% Design in September this year featured work from Residents past and present. Old boys Deadgood™ and James UK exhibited alongside newcomer Neil Conley. Similarly at the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art in October John Reeves, now living and working in Vietnam, exhibited furniture from the Reeves Design Louis Zinc collection whilst current resident David Irwin showed his timber stacking chair.

&#60;img src="http://payload56.cargocollective.com/1/6/219834/3420276/granny-in-the-double.jpg" width="652" height="640" width_o="652" height_o="640" src_o="http://payload56.cargocollective.com/1/6/219834/3420276/granny-in-the-double_o.jpg" data-mid="17623161"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

These retrospective events highlight the network of designers the residency has helped to create. By telling the story of former and present Designers in Residence the ‘community of practice’ the scheme has developed becomes clear. Indeed the support designers at different stages in their career offer each other is crucial in developing sustainable enterprises.

Now that the Internet has been proven more than a passing distraction, the Designers in Residence programme is confident to cement its web presence. This site builds upon the sporadically updated holding pages of the noughties with clickable links, a menu system and content.
